Why You Should Never Go on a Cruise: An Expert Opinion
I recently came across an article in The Medical Republic, interviewing Professor Candid, an expert in the cruise industry, who argues that cruises are a recipe for disaster. While I appreciate the academic approach, I wanted to offer a more personal and opinionated take on why, in my view, cruises are not the best vacation choice.
Firstly, the health risks are a major concern. Professor Candid highlights the potential for virus outbreaks, and I couldn't agree more. The confined spaces and lack of fresh air on cruise ships create the perfect environment for viruses to thrive and mutate. Imagine a future where cruise ships become incubators for new, deadly strains, making diseases like mpox and Ebola look like child's play. It's a terrifying thought.
And let's not forget the classic cruise ship illness, scurvy. While it was thought to be a thing of the past, the article mentions its resurgence. Picture yourself, trapped on a ship for months, surviving on chips from an all-you-can-eat buffet. The lack of fresh produce and vitamin C-rich foods would lead to a scurvy outbreak, leaving passengers with a nasty case of the gums and a weakened immune system.
The social aspect of cruises is another potential pitfall. Being cooped up with a self-entitled Roger, who loves to boast about his recruitment company, could drive anyone mad. The idea of being trapped with someone like that for an extended period is enough to make anyone consider jumping ship. Cruises, in this sense, can be a mental health hazard.
Sea sickness is another common issue, and Professor Candid's description of being pounded by waves in a windowless container is a vivid one. I can imagine the nausea and disorientation, leading to a messy situation. The idea of crawling on your hands and knees through lukewarm vomit is not an appealing one.
Lastly, the threat of pirates is a classic cruise ship scare. While it's a romanticized idea, the reality is that pirates are dangerous, and a hook-handed pirate forcing you to walk the plank is not a pleasant experience. However, if you're stuck next to Roger, perhaps it's a blessing in disguise.
In my opinion, Professor Candid's points are well-made, and I share his concerns. Cruises, while appealing to some, come with a host of potential problems. From health risks to social dilemmas, the idea of a cruise vacation might not be as glamorous as it seems. Perhaps it's time to reconsider the traditional vacation and explore alternative, safer options.
